Dating back to 1969, the Philippine Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Law, a.k.a. RA 5680, was enacted. It has already been 45 years since it was passed! SAY WHAT YOU WANT. Not all people are mind readers. Let us make what you want be crystal clear. Below is are some questions to guide you in knowing what you want and let it be known. Please answer the poll with all honesty. NO repeat poll takers are allowed. If you need a reference, you can refer to the RA 5680 document below the poll. Now, MAKE YOUR STAND.
Medical professionals were taught about different types of illnesses and its mechanisms. Learning the cause of each would greatly help in determining the treatment action plan and preventing worse conditions to happen. This is what is known as PATHOGENESIS. From the Greek words 'pathos' and 'genesis,' meaning the 'disease' and 'creation.' The new Latin word was first used in 1876. From then on, most medical practitioners believed that the path to health was focused on the disease itself, discovering its origins and determinants.

Letters of The AlphabetWHAT YOU SEEThe latest buzz emerging in the fitness and sports conditioning world is functional training. It is slowly making its way into mainstream and is already keeping up with the old school 60's weight training. Although body building has made its mark in the performance enhancement industry, it is still not so popular amongst people who are scared of a muscle bulking physique. Functional training has now been the modern holistic approach to physical conditioning. But let me clarify that this is not a new concept! This sudden shift of training becoming more functional started with physiotherapists that was later adopted by fitness professionals. What differs functional training from bodybuilding training is it targets improving one's function. The goal is improving your functionality as an UFC fighter, a basketball player, an engineer or a golfer. You may be a teenager who wants to improve his goal kick during a game or a grandfather who wants to carry his grandchild over to the playground every week. Whatever gets you going everyday is what functional training is all about. However, there has been a lot of debate about the real concept of functional training. Some fitness gurus have set that functional training involves multiple joints and should be done in standing. Otherwise, it is said to be non-functional. Is it really? Here is a video clip of Naudi Aguilar, who is the founder of Functional Patterns, discussing what functional training is truly about and how it is done.
By Mohamed Kassim Physiotherapist & Manual Therapist BPT(India),GCOMT(Australia),CMP,CES,CFMS,CDNP Introduction Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation or Simply IASTM is a new range of tool which enables clinicians to efficiently locate and treat individuals diagnosed with soft tissue dysfunction. The technique itself is said to be a modern evolution from Traditional Chinese Medicine called Gua Sha[1]. However, Gua Sha was not used to treat musculoskeletal conditions but was traditionally applied along meridiens to move the bad chi out through the skin. IASTM is a procedure that is rapidly growing in popularity due to its effectiveness and efficiency while remaining non-invasive, with its own indications and limitations. IASTM is performed with ergonomically designed instruments that detect and treat fascial restrictions, encourage rapid localization and effectively treat areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis, chronic inflammation, or degeneration. As in any Manual therapy treatment, supplementation with exercises and additional modalities e.g. joint mobilization designed to correct biomechanical deficiencies by addressing musculoskeletal strength and muscle imbalances throughout the entire kinetic chain should be used in conjunction with IASTM. Happy New Year! :)
It has just been 44 days since PT Perspectives published its first online post. PT Perspectives started with just a mere conversation with my colleagues about the current status of our profession in the Philippines. It then followed by a series of meetings talking about continuing education and sharing our knowledge about what we know in terms of practice. We talked about problems we've encountered from our work experience, frustrations about the system and aspirations of how can it be better. Suddenly, it just hit me. This is something worth standing up for. |
